Arizona Department of Environmental Quality AirArizona App

Air Arizona App

What started as a one-off project for a remote southern AZ border town blossomed into a comprehensive app that addresses the unique pollution concerns of several regions throughout the state.

From the onset, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality knew that a “one size fits all” approach wasn’t going to work. Rules that applied to the metro Phoenix area were merely suggestions in the border town of Nogales, and the unique realities of the area meant specific habits needed to be addressed. So with AirNogales, our iOS and Android app focused on the pollution that came from trash burning and commonplace dirt road driving while offering reasonable alternatives in times of unhealthy air days.

Similar logic applied to AirYuma, our cross-platform app for the Yuma region, and from there, AirArizona addressed Lead and SO2 pollutants unique to the Hayden/Winkelman and Miami/Globe mining town areas of the state.

As usage continued to increase in 2019 and managing multiple apps became cumbersome and costly, a new tactic was enacted: AirArizona merged Nogales, Yuma, Hayden/Winkelman and Miami/Globe into one app along with Tucson and metro Phoenix, giving users the ability to configure alerts and notifications, track specific pollutants, view historical and 24-hour forecasted data, and share alerts across a variety of social platforms.
