Metro Phoenix Library Photography
Get to know your local branch - there's more to the library than the books on the shelves.
The Maricopa Library District is responsible for 17 branches across the metro Phoenix area. Over the course of a week in December 2019, Catywampus visited all 17 branches to capture the unique environments, programs, and patrons that are special to each.
Working with each branch’s management, we plotted optimal times to capture unique community programs and external architectural details. Shooting in December posed additional challenges: Many branches were decorated with holiday flair that would look dated for year-round promotional materials, and several had a small, 10-minute “crack of dawn” window of ideal sunlight due to the geographic locations of the buildings. We made it work, because that’s what we do.
Before: Raw Photo
External photography often involves making the best of what you’re given. This building was undergoing some construction, and its position on the land meant that sunlight never hit the face of the structure.
After: Processed Photo
We were able to remove the ugly construction barricades and bring some artificial light to the front of the building, bringing it out of the shadows into the warmth of the desert sun.
